19. Repeat Steps 17 and 18 for the three remaining edges.

20. Repeat, adding four light strips (on the odd numbers), then four dark strips (on the even numbers) until you have covered the paper pattern.

21. Place the block with the paper on top and trim ¼” past the solid outer line to leave ¼” seam allowance. You may be cutting beyond the paper pattern.

FLYING GEESE BORDER

Cutting

You will need a total of 84 Flying Geese.

Rough Cut (for each unit)

Triangles for #1:

Cut one 5½” × 5½” square, then cut in half diagonally twice.

Triangles for #2 and #3:

Cut one 3½” × 3½” square, then cut in half diagonally.

Piecing

1. Make 22 photocopies of the Flying Geese Border pattern (5 for the top, 5 for the bottom, and 6 for each side border; see page 25). Cut out the paper patterns just outside the dashed lines. Tape the paper patterns together for each border, matching the lines, using a product that can be ironed (such as Glue-Baste-It or Sewer’s Fix-it Tape). Be sure there is ¼” seam allowance on all sides. (Add the dashed line if necessary.) You will need two paper patterns that have 21 Flying Geese (for the side borders), two that have 19 Flying Geese (for the top and bottom borders), and two that have 2 Flying Geese (also for the top and bottom borders).
